The tutoring trap
Finishing today’s problem can leave tomorrow unchanged.
On-demand tutoring begins with the immediate task: the student brings a question, and the tutor helps the student get through it. That can be useful, but the interaction is usually organized around the problem rather than a long-term development plan.
Students who are least likely to recognize that they need help—or to ask for it—can remain outside the experience entirely.
